I read CNN’s Five Things every morning. I want to stay in tune with world and national news, but I can only process so much without becoming saddened or incensed. So, I go with the five top news items that CNN deems significant.

CNN adds in some extra features each day, with a rather glib tone. Like yesterday.

CNN reported that Elon Musk has pulled way ahead of Jeff Bezos as the richest person on Earth. Musk tweeted a second-place medal to Bezos, all in fun of course.

Because, you know, that’s fun.

Is it wrong of me to think of all the people, especially children, suffering from poverty on Earth as Musk and Bezos duke it out for who has the biggest…I’m not going to say what I want to say here…net worth?

No! It is not wrong!

And, I’m not just going to think it. I’m going to back up my thoughts with statistics. Rarely do these figures make headlines, so here they are as a reminder of the reality too many people, and especially children, live on this Earth.

Statistics on child poverty from Unicef

  • 1 billion children worldwide are multi-dimensionally poor — without access to education, health, housing, nutrition, sanitation or water.
